Raccoons are the heavyweights of the attic world. If it sounds like a small person is walking around upstairs, it’s likely a raccoon.
The Sound: Heavy footsteps, dragging noises, and occasional "chattering" or vocalizations.
The Schedule: Strictly nocturnal. You’ll hear them most active shortly after sunset when they head out to forage, and again before dawn when they return.
The Sign: Torn shingles, damaged soffits, or large entry holes.
Squirrels are often confused with rats, but their schedule is the dead giveaway.
The Sound: Fast, frantic scurrying and the sound of rolling nuts or acorns across the drywall.
The Schedule: Diurnal. You’ll hear them most at sunrise and late afternoon. If you hear activity during the day, it’s almost certainly a squirrel.
The Sign: Chewed wood around fascia boards or small holes near the roofline.
Rodents are masters of using the "interstate system" inside your home—the wall voids and floor joists.
The Sound: Light scratching, gnawing, or pitter-patter. It often sounds like it’s coming from "inside" the walls rather than just on top of the ceiling.
The Schedule: Nocturnal. They are most active when the house is completely quiet.
The Sign: Small droppings near food sources or dark "rub marks" along baseboards.
Whether it's a squirrel or a raccoon, wildlife in an attic isn't just a noise nuisance. Animals can quickly cause thousands of dollars in damage by:
Fire Hazards: Chewing through electrical wiring.
Health Risks: Trampling and contaminating insulation with waste.
Parasites: Bringing in fleas, ticks, and mites.
Identifying the noise is a great start, but getting them out safely requires a professional eye. Joey and the Mister Critter team don’t just trap the animal; we find every "weak link" in your home’s exterior and seal it tight.
Hear something upstairs? Don't wait for the damage to mount.
